Shelby Electric
Cooperative offers
Discovery Channel
curriculum to area
Schools
Schools and
educators are making
a positive
difference in our
families,
communities, and our
nation every day and
Shelby Electric
Cooperative would
like to say thank
you. One way the
Cooperative is
showing its
appreciation to
educators for
preparing our youth
for the future is by
offering some
educational
materials to help
Teachers in the
classroom. As a
Touchstone Energy
Partner, the
Cooperative is
pleased to provide,
free of charge,
classroom materials,
and assistance from
the Discovery
Channel School.

The Discovery
Channel School
program is called
“Get Charged!
Electricity and
You”. The curriculum
and materials for
the “Get Charged”
program were
developed by
Discovery Channel
School for classroom
use and comply with
the National Science
Education standards.
It is designed for
students in grades 5
through 9. Using the
Discovery Channel
School materials,
students learn about
where electricity is
made, how it is
measured, and how it
is used. Students
even learn how to
make a battery from
a lemon. Other
topics covered
include careers in
energy and new
energy sources from
Earth and Space.
Teachers receive
videos, a CD-ROM,
student workbooks,
and a teacher’s
guide. The program
is valued at $780
for each kit.
Any school that
would like to
participate in the
Discovery Channel
School program
should contact Chris
Spears at the
Cooperative. Chris
can be reached via
