GRID UPDATE: 1:30 pm 1.25.26

MISO grid alert into a safe area so concern has passed.

The recent MISO alert was a rare occurrence but one that we could see more often as the demand for energy continues to grow.

GRID UPDATE: 9:10 pm 1.24.26

Things are looking better ... we will provide another update on Sunday.

Stay Safe in this cold and snowy weather!

GRID UPDATE: 4:35 pm 1.24.26

MISO is expecting that demand vs supply is going to be tight tonight. NO ACTION REQUIRED at this time. There is a window we can voluntarily help by curbing electrical use between 5pm - 7:30pm tonight.

MISO has reached out all utilities and Generation and Transmission utilities of this potential concern. Again, this is not just a Shelby Electric Cooperative issue. It is multi-state utility concern as the electric grid is being stressed.

We will continue to monitor this situation and update you on any new developments.

GRID RELIABILITY HEADS UP:

As we are all aware of the frigid temperatures across the area, and we have all seen the weather reports online and on television; there is a multi-state winter storm that is pending this weekend which is expected to impact around 35 states. The frigid temperatures that look to linger into and past the predicted mix of ice and snow across the multi-state winter storm, this weather is taxing the electric grid.

While there is not any concern right now, we just wanted to give you a heads up that the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) has issued an Energy Alert 2(EEA2). This not isolated to just Shelby Electric Cooperative, it is all utilities in the midwest.

AGAIN THERE IS NOT ANY CONCERN RIGHT NOW ... We would ask you to monitor your electric load and conserve where you can.

We will continue to monitor this situation and update you on any new developments.

About MISO

MISO is the electric grid operator for the central United States. They ensure power flows reliably and affordably across 15 states and the Canadian province of Manitoba. Additionally, MISO facilitates the buying and selling of electricity in its region and partners with its stakeholders to plan the grid of the future.

With these extreme temperature conditions, along with increased demand, the electrical grid may get to the point where not enough energy can be produced to meet the demand, Across the United States, the Midwest, and Illinois, we could see power shortages in certian scenerios. MISO is one of the organizations that monitors this.
